The EU Parliament approves the new Von der Leyen commission

Germany achieved the worst result in the bloc’s history

On Wednesday (27) the European Union Parliament approved the new executive group of the bloc, which will be led once again by German Ursula von der Leyen, in power since 2019.

In an open vote, the new composition of the European Commission received 370 votes in favor and 282 against, as well as 36 abstentions, ending months of negotiations to share power in the EU after elections last June.

The second commission chaired by Von der Leyen obtained just 10 votes more than the 360 which correspond to half of the European Parliament, with a percentage of 51.39%, the worst result in the history of the bloc, which reflects the differences that emerged during the negotiations .

“Today is a good day for Europe because the vote demonstrated the preservation of the centre. I am very grateful for the trust given by the European Parliament”, said the president.

Last July, Von der Leyen was re-elected president of the European Commission for another five years with 401 votes, with the support of her party, the centre-right European People’s Party (EPP), and the Socialist and Democratic (S&D) groups. ), centre-left, Renew Europe, center and Greens.

However, the commission (a kind of ministry) established by the German woman angered the progressive camp by including as vice president the Italian Raffaele Fitto, a close ally of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and a member of the right and far right. the Conservative and Reformist wing, which is not part of the majority of the European Parliament.

Choosing Fitto, however, would be a way for Von der Leyen to guarantee relevance within the Executive to Italy, the third largest economy and founding country of the bloc, and maintain good relations with Meloni.

A part of the EPP, however, opposed the nomination of the Spanish socialist Teresa Ribera to another vice-presidency of the European Commission. Minister of the Ecological Transition until two days ago, she is criticized by the center-right for the government’s response to the disastrous floods that caused the deaths of over 200 people in the province of Valencia last October.

Von der Leyen’s executive will be made up of 26 commissioners, one for each EU member state, with the exception of Germany, the president’s country. .
