Life expectancy at birth once again exceeds pre-pandemic levels, the IBGE says

Last year in Brazil, life expectancy at birth again exceeded the pre-Covid-19 pandemic level, reaching 76.4 years, according to data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), with an advance by 11.3 months compared to 2022.

In 2019, before the pandemic, life expectancy at birth in Brazil was 76.2 years. Last year, life expectancy increased for both men and women.

For the male population the increase was 12.4 months, from 72.1 years to 73.1 years. For women, who live longer on average than men, the gain was slightly lower, 10.5 months, going from 78.8 years to 79.7 years.

“The increase in the number of deaths in Brazil and around the world due to the coronavirus pandemic has reduced life expectancy at birth in 2020 and 2021, reaching the level of 72.8 years (69.3 years for men and 76.4 years for women). The recovery of this indicator starting from 2022 reflects the reduction in excess deaths caused by the pandemic for both sexes”, said Izabel Marri, Head of Studies. and DinĂ¢mica Analysis. IBGE demographics.

Mortality table projections are used to define the social security factor and to calculate social security.

In 1940, life expectancy at birth in Brazil for both sexes was 45.5 years, that is, in recent decades there has been an increase of 30.9 years in life expectancy in the country, equal to 30.2 years for men and 31.4 years for women.

In Brazil, in 2023, life expectancy at age 60 was 22.5 years for the total population. For an 80-year-old individual it was 8.9 years, according to the institute.

In 2023, the probability that a newborn would not complete the first year of life, the infant mortality rate, was 12.5 deaths per thousand births, 13.5 for males and 11.4 for females.

Also last year, a 20-year-old man was 4.1 times more likely to never reach age 25 than a woman, according to the IBGE. This happens because the incidence of deaths due to “external or unnatural causes” which affect the male population more intensely, such as road accidents and violence, is higher.
