The Wizard of Oz universe has enchanted people for many years, both in the original book and its sequels, and in its adaptations. Inspiring films, series, animations and even musicals, the story continues to enchant generations.

One of the latest successful adaptations is Evil. Inspired by the book Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West (1995), by Gregory Maguire, the play received a musical adaptation on Broadway. And now, finally, it gets its film version, with Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo in the cast.

The Wizard of Oz (1939)

Dorothy Gale is transported by a cyclone to the magical Land of Oz. To get home, he must follow the yellow brick road to the Wizard, meeting friends like the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion along the way.

The film is one of the great classics of cinema, being one of the most acclaimed musicals of all time, especially the song Over the Rainbow.

The Return of the Wizard of Oz (1985)

Dorothy returns to Oz to save her friends from the Nome King, who has taken control of the land. The story is darker than the original and introduces new characters such as Tik-Tok and Pumpkinhead Jack.

The film is an unofficial sequel to the 1939 classic and is based on the sequels to the original book, The Marvelous Land of Oz and Ozma of Oz. The film was initially unsuccessful, but over the years it acquired cult status.

Oz: The Great and Powerful (2013)

Oscar Diggs, an ambitious circus magician, is brought to Oz, where he discovers he can become the savior of the earth. He must decide whether to use his intelligence for good or evil.

Film focused on how the Wizard of Oz arrived in a fantasy land. Directed by Sam Raimi, famous for the Spider-Man and Evil Dead trilogies, the film features a stellar cast, such as James Franco in the role of Oscar Diggs, as well as Mila Kunis, Michelle Williams and Rachel Weisz.

The Unforgettable Magician (The Magician1978)

A modern, urban version of the classic, in which Dorothy, now living in New York, is transported to Oz and embarks on a musical journey full of soul and funk.

The film is directed by Sidney Lumet (from classics such as Ocean’s Twelve and Dog Day Afternoon) and great stars in the cast such as Diana Ross, Michael Jackson and Richard Pryor.

However, even with big names in the production, the film was a box office failure.

Tom and Jerry: The Wizard of Oz (2011)

A tornado hits Kansas and takes Dorothy and her dog to the magical world of Oz. There, in addition to the classic characters from the book, there are also the duo Tom and Jerry.

Amidst much confusion, they band together to help Dorothy get home, facing witches and other dangers along the way. A unique mix of typical cat and mouse humor with the magic of the world of Oz.

The Trapalhões and the Wizard of Oróz (1984)

Os Trapalhões gives a Brazilian touch to the story, it is a comedy full of music and jokes typical of the comedy group. The plot is adapted to be set in the Brazilian hinterland.

Didi and her friends try to escape the poverty in which they live. During their journey, they encounter a mindless Scarecrow and a heartless Tin Man. Together they travel to the city of Oroz, facing the drought and the tyranny of Colonel Ferreira, while the delegate Leão, a coward, does nothing.

The Legend of Oz: Dorothy Returns (2014)

After returning to Kansas, Dorothy discovers that Oz is in danger again. He returns to help his friends, facing the evil Jester, who threatens to destroy everything. This animation also works as a sequel to the classic 1939 film.

The original cast of voice actors includes famous names such as Lea Michele, Dan Aykroyd and Martin Short. In the Brazilian version, Dorothy is voiced by Manu Gavassi.

Dee and Her Friends in Oz (2024)

A very colorful children’s series. In this computer graphics animation we follow the adventures of Dee and her friends in Oz.

In each adventure we meet fascinating characters who explore the Land of Oz while learning valuable lessons about friendship and teamwork. It’s perfect to watch with young children and families.

Lost in Oz

Another animation series, but with a more adventurous feel. In this production we follow Dorothy Gale, a 12-year-old girl, and her dog Toto, who are transported to the modern-day Emerald City.

There, with the help of new friends, they face magical challenges as they search for their way home.
