The Joker, Batman’s nemesis and unwelcome threat to Gotham, has taken on many guises since his birth in DC Comics in 1951 – always with that brightly colored suit and that demonic laugh. In Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman film, Jack Nicholson showed a comical yet disturbing side to the character. In front of Christopher Nolan’s camera, Heath Ledger showed the character’s vengeful and maniacal side in The Dark Knight, while Joaquin Phoenix’s stellar performance in 2019’s Joker introduced viewers to an increasingly dark and troubled clown as we begin to empathize with him.

This annoying reflex definitely adds something important to the character, and yet it wasn’t in the script!
In the documentary I Am Heath Ledger (2017), Vocal Coach Heath Ledger For this film, Gerry Grenell said that Heath had to constantly lick his lips because the prosthesis fell apart every time he spoke. He completed it while portraying the character as a tic. In fact, the actor’s prosthetic scars, which were covered in red paint, kept falling off on set. Ledger’s usual shaft began as a reflex to check that the scars were still in place and make sure they stayed that way. Gradually, this became a mannerism that Ledger perfectly incorporated into his performance.
