Focus on streaming: Disney decides to close subscription channels in Brazil

Starting in February 2025, Disney will close the vast majority of its subscription channels in Brazil. This means that, on that date, the Star Channel, Cinecanal, FX, Nat Geo, Disney Channel and Baby TV brands will go off the air.

They all screened films and series, but had suffered from a decline in audiences in recent years. Only ESPN channels will not be affected by the measure, which has already been communicated to operators such as Claro and Sky.

In a statement, Disney explained the changes. The company said it is simply following the market and modernizing content delivery based on audience demand.

According to the company, “in response to transformations in the local media and entertainment landscape and to ensure we continue to evolve and meet the needs of our consumers with agility and innovation, we have decided to discontinue operation of certain linear channels in Brazil from 28 February 2025”.

Finally, the company emphasizes that “this decision includes the closure of the Star Channel, Cinecanal, FX, National Geographic, Disney Channel and Baby TV channels, without impacting our sports channels.”
