Hyundai presents the Endurance project with Lotterer and Derani

At an event in Dubau, Hyundai details its Endurance project and announces Lotterer and Pipo Derani as drivers

The announcement had already been made previously, but now Hyundai has made public the details of its plans to enter the world of Endurance. At an event held in Dubai this Wednesday (04/12), the Koreans detailed their intentions, presenting the first images of the Genesis Magma GMR-001.

In addition to confirming the use of the brand for its luxury line, Hyundai has confirmed its entry into the FIA WEC in 2026, with the support of French IDEC Sports and ORECA as a partnership for the development of the car. At this point it was also said that the team will have a base near the Paul Ricard circuit to be close to IDEC and ORECA.

Cyril Abiteboul, currently head of Hyundai’s competition division, has been confirmed as the main team. And André Lotteter and Pipo Derani were announced as pilots. The choice is very positive, both have great experience in Endurance.

André Lotterer and Pipo Derani: the initial duo of the Korean project

Lotterer was part of this year’s FIA WEC winning trio with Porsche Penske (he was also champion in 2012), won Le Mans three times and contributed to the development of the Audi and Porsche Endurance cars. Derani was already being considered for one of the vacant seats, even more so after his rejection of an invitation to become a BMW Hypercar driver in IMSA became public.

At the same event, Hyundai confirmed that it will join IMSA in 2027 and will soon announce new names for the project. This is another step towards the reorganization of Korean competition activities, which has announced that it will no longer have an official team in the WRC at the end of 2025 and leaves in the air the possibility of thinking about F1 soon…
