Three moral tales

After Asako I & II, the Senses “saga” which developed into three films (and five segments) and the international success of “Drive My Car” (recently Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film). Ryusuke Hamaguchi Returns with Random tales and other fantasies (Guzen Sozo). The filmmaker this time selects three short films, one after the other, each with a different character but with the same thread that connects them to their human relationships and their morals. The film clearly coincides with the film of Eric Romer, who created his famous moral tales, a series of six films (such as La Collectionneuse or Ma Nuit chez Maud).

A long sequence of erotic reading!

All three focus on female characters, the filmmaker, who is also the screenwriter of this film, explains that this is why he is interested in female characters, able to better capture the X-ray Japanese society. He says they face much more difficulty than men. All of these women have a quest that they try to accomplish through these interactions with other characters.

Misunderstandings, coincidences (also meaning the word “Guzen”) and sudden twists are on the date of these three stories, with many dialogues and closed writing. All this has to do with the long sequence of erotic reading! I will not tell you more.

Each segment takes place almost behind closed doors, even if the set unfolds throughout the story. Note that Tales of Chance and Other Fantasies were partly filmed during a pandemic, in this case in the last segment, with a reduced team.
