Argentine workers in slave-like conditions are rescued in Arvorezinha


The joint operation guarantees the return of workers to Argentina and the responsibility of the company involved.

Three Argentine workers, aged 29 and 35 years oldthey were saved small treein the Taquari Valley, while they collected yerba mate in conditions similar to slavery. The case was announced this Wednesday (4) by Regional Superintendency of Labor and Employment of the RS (SRTE-RS).




Degrading situation

The workers were housed in a old school deactivatedno shower, fridge or minimal living facility. They used a small classroom as a bedroom and kitchen. Two of those saved were illiterate and they had no documents authorizing them to work in Brazil.

According to the Public Ministry of Labor (MPT-RS)the Argentines had been linked to the herbal company for about two months, after arriving in the municipality in April with the promise of a job.

Measures adopted

The operation was carried out by MPT-RS and from Federal Traffic Police (PRF). After the rescue, the operators received:

  • TFR;
  • Three installments of unemployment insurance;
  • Return costs to Argentina paid by the authorities.

The company involved, whose name was not disclosed, signed a Conduct adjustment deadline (TAC) guarantee the labor rights of rescued people and pay compensation.

Fight against slave labor

The case reinforces the Brazilian authorities’ commitment to combating degrading working conditions and the exploitation of vulnerable workers, especially foreigners, in sectors such as agriculture. The action also highlights the need for greater vigilance to prevent similar cases.
