South Korean parliament calls for “immediate arrest” of president

Yoon Suk-yeol tried to impose martial law and opposed impeachment

South Korea’s parliament passed a resolution on Tuesday (10) calling for the “immediate arrest” of the country’s president, Yoon Suk-yeol, and seven other people in response to the government’s failed attempt to impose martial law.

The measure approved by the National Assembly obtained 191 votes in favor, 94 against and 3 abstentions and reveals the opposition’s desire to maintain pressure for the departure of Yoon, who resisted the impeachment request, but still risks losing his position. The resolution, however, is not binding.

Yesterday the Seoul Prosecutor’s Office banned the president from leaving the country while he is under investigation due to the imposition of martial law which lasted just six hours. The decree limited access to civil rights, replaced normal legislation with military laws and sparked a wave of protests in South Korea.

Yoon is the subject of a criminal investigation for insurrection and abuse of power. .
