After beating Max Holloway at UFC 306, Ilia Topuria remains UFC featherweight champion. But the Georgian’s reign should not be long in coming to an end, according to the fighter himself in an interview with Spanish radio COPE.
The fighter said he is considering moving up a category and testing himself at lightweight in the future. Although to do so he will have to give up the 66kg belt in preparation for the move to the organization’s top division.
– Maybe it’s time for a change, yes. Now is the time to enjoy it and not think too much about losing weight. I debuted at UFC 2020 and I’m already ranked. If you move up the leaderboard of that division and change, you lose everything you achieved. You spend four years there, you grow, you evolve, your body develops and you start having trouble gaining weight,” said Topuria.
The Georgian awaits the fate of the lightweight title, which will be decided in January when Islam Makhachev faces Arman Tsarukyan. If he can’t convince the UFC to give him the chance to go for a ‘title shot’, Topuria already has someone in mind who wants to debut in the top division: Charles of the Bronx.
– I wanted to fight in Miami, but I don’t know. I have no idea, because for now we’re just talking, talking about what my future will be like. But, more or less, I already have a clear idea of what I want and an idea of what I expect. I want to go up a division, and with Islam, who is the champion, he will fight in January and he should not stay, I mean he will not be ready in April, I would like to fight the number 1 challenger in the division, which is Charles from the Bronx – he said.
