Mikey Madison stole ‘the last 15 minutes of’ Once Upon a Time in… Hollywood, says director

One of the first major projects of Mikey Madison’s career, Once Upon a Time in… Hollywood was directed by Quentin Tarantino

Before being one of those listed for nomination by the Oscars 2025 of Best Actress for work in Anora, Mikey Madison was highlighted by Once Upon a Time in… Hollywood (2019), directed by Quentin Tarantinoand stole “the last 15 minutes” of the production, according to the filmmaker Sean Baker.

It is worth remembering how Baker is the director of Anora and films like Florida Project (2017) and Red Rocket (2021). With a release date scheduled for January 23, 2025 in Brazilian cinemas, Anora also has names like Yuriy Borisov, Mark Eidelstein, Lindsey Normington, Darja Nikolajewna Jekamassowa (Galina), Vache Tovmasyan, Ivy Wolk (Crystal), Luna Sofia Miranda (Lulu), between others. Read the synopsis below:

Anora is a prostitute Brooklyn who impulsively marries the son of a Russian oligarch. But his fairy tale is threatened when his family wants to annul the marriage.

During a question and answer session at a Anora node Barbican Centerin London, last Monday, 9, Sean Baker recalled that the first time he saw a work by Mikey Madison it was precisely in Once Upon a Time in… Hollywood.

“I saw her in Once Upon a Time in… Hollywood and I think she steals the last 15 minutes of the film,” said the filmmaker (via NME). “And also how she is presented as one of the girls [de Charles] Manson. When she comes home and Brad Pitt throws a can of dog food in her face and then she goes into the pool and gets burned by Leonardo DiCapriothat was a great first impression for me because I didn’t know her from the series [de drama] Better Things.”

I only knew her from Once upon a time and as I cast my films myself, every time I see someone like that, it really captures my attention. At the time, I kind of filed it away in the back of my head as someone I might want to work with.

Right away, Baker explained how he was “shocked” by Madison not getting a starring role after appearing in the most recent film by Tarantino. After the 2019 film, she was one of the villains of Scream 5 (2022).

“I went to see Panic on opening weekend with my wife [Samantha Quan]which is a producer of Anoraand we were sitting in the cinema and it became clear to us,” he recalled. “Panic It wasn’t even over and we were like, ‘There’s our Ani.'”

“It was a combination of these two performances in Panic Before she’s revealed as the killer, she also plays a sassy young adult and there’s a lot of humor in that performance,” he added. “If you go back and look at it, it’s really subtle and fun. Then I just knew and I turned to Sam and said, ‘Let’s call her agent the second we leave the theater.'”
