Benfica and Bologna don’t come out of scratch in the Champions League

The goalless draw at the Estádio da Luz, in the 6th round, interrupts the Portuguese winning streak and practically eliminates the Italians

On Wednesday Benfica and Bologna drew goalless (11), in the match valid for the 6th round of the 2024/25 Champions League phase. The teams searched for goals for 90 minutes, but were unable to overcome their opponents’ goalkeepers. The duel at the Estádio da Luz, in Lisbon, was marked by the large number of yellow cards, five for each team.

Thus Benfica concluded a sequence of five victories in all competitions and stumbled at home at this stage of the Champions League. With this result the Reds dropped to 15th place, with 10 points, in the qualifying zone for the direct elimination playoffs.

Furthermore, it was Benfica’s first draw under the leadership of Bruno Lage, formerly of Botafogo. Since the coach’s arrival there have been 14 victories and two defeats.

Benfica still dreams of a place in the round of 16, but they will have two difficult opponents ahead of them. This is because the Portuguese team will face Manchester City and Barcelona in the last two rounds of this stage of the Champions League.

Bologna, however, only gained their second point in the competition and was practically eliminated from the Champions League, in 33rd place. However, this is the fourth consecutive match without defeat for the Italian team, with two draws and two victories, in all competitions.
