Extermination 3: everything we know about Sony’s new film

It’s been almost 20 years since the last film in this series was released, 17 to be exact. Finally, on December 10, 2024, Sony released the first trailer of the long-awaited sequel “Extermination: The Evolution” (“28 years later”, in the original English title), which shows the situation in a post-apocalyptic Britain.

Director Danny Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland teamed up in 2002 to create the original zombie apocalypse film, starring the then-unknown Cillian Murphy. Although they only served as producers on the 2007 sequel, the duo will return for the third installment.

However, “Extermination: The Evolution” is not just a continuation of the franchise. This film also marks the beginning of a completely new trilogy and, according to a interview of one of the main actors, two of the new films in the series have already been recorded.

Nearly three decades have passed since the rabies virus escaped from a bioweapons laboratory, the trailer for “Extermination: The Evolution” shows a group of survivors living on an island with extreme security measures, connected to the mainland from a single bridge.

Survivors are seen wielding bows and arrows, driving cattle, or adhering to traditional roles in society. However, when the group members leave the island on a mission to the mainland, they discover secrets that have transformed not only the infected, but other survivors as well.

Set to the recording of Rudyard Kipling’s war poem “Boots,” narrated by former silent film star Taylor Holmes, the trailer also shows what appears to be a military unit moving cautiously in the darkness. Check:

Cast of Deathstroke: Evolution

The film is led by a cast that is new to the franchise. Among the actors are Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer and Ralph Fiennes, who are seen fighting zombies in the scary trailer. Other new cast members include Erin Kellyman and Jack O’Connell.

Additionally, many fans are already speculating whether original star Cillian Murphy will return to the franchise or not. According to a brief comment According to Tim Rothman, president of Sony Motion Pictures, Cillian Murphy will have a surprising role in the new film.

According to the official site of the film, “Extermination 3” will be released in theaters on June 20, 2025.
