MT: the re-elected mayor is denounced by the parliamentarian on charges of buying indigenous votes with chicken

The deputy mayor and the councilor were also reported

The Public Electoral Ministry (MPE) denounced the Edelo Marcelo Ferrari (União), re-elected mayor of Brasnorte (MT), 587 kilometers from Cuiabá, for suspicion of irregular transportation of voters and purchase of votes with money, fuel and even frozen chicken of the Enawenê-Nawê indigenous people.

The action brought by prosecutor Jacques de Barros Lopes could lead to the impeachment of Edelo, deputy mayor Roseli Borges de Araújo Gonçalves and councilor Gilmar Celso Gonçalves, the imposition of a fine of up to R$53,200 and even the annulment of the elections municipal. The mayor and the councilor can be ineligible for up to eight years. Four other people were named in the action.

According to the Public Prosecutor, the complaints also concern the temptation of the indigenous people to move their electoral headquarters to Brasnorte. The aforementioned land belongs to the municipalities of Juína, Comodoro and Sapezal.

This change of domicile for indigenous voters is seen as determining the outcome of the election. Of the 107 voters transferred to Brasnorte, 96 voted, which represents a lower abstention rate than the city’s average.

The MP also recalls that two buses had been sent to the village to transport voters on the eve of the elections, but were stopped by the army after irregularities were reported. Despite the intervention of the agents, the indigenous people used their own vehicles, with the fuel paid for by an ally of the party.

According to the agency, the complaint is based on videos, statements and records of bank transfers. Rogério Gonçalves, undersecretary of Infrastructure, and João Gomes da Silva Júnior, director of lighting at the Secretariat of Infrastructure, are named in the complaint as being responsible for logistics and payments related to the irregularities.

Through social media, Edelo said she was surprised by the action and denied any involvement in electoral irregularities: “Our lawyers are inquiring about the action so that the truth can be re-established,” she wrote.
