After its release in early December, the Joe Burton-created series was an immediate success, reaching the top ten most-watched series in 89 countries. A performance that proves the enthusiasm for this thrilling spy thriller and its high-flying cast.

A tense finale full of revelations

The final episode of the first season treated viewers to an explosive mix of emotion and violence. Keira Knightley plays Helen Webb, a woman torn between her family life with her husband Wallace, the Secretary of Defense, and her role as an informant for a secret spy organization called Black Doves, led by the mysterious Mrs. Reid (Sarah Lancashire).

In this finale, Helen and her old friend Sam (Ben Whishaw) embark on a quest for revenge marked by shocking revelations. Between state secrets, personal conflicts and dangerous alliances, everything culminates in a bloody confrontation that leaves palpable tension until the end.

Joe Burton shares his plans for season two

in the interview The Hollywood ReporterJoe Burton confirmed that Season 2 is already in the works. “I wanted to end the first season on a high note and leave the door open“, he explains.

This sequel should further explore the complex relationships between the characters, and introduce a real antagonist, a kind of “Moriart” (referring to Sherlock Holmes’ eternal enemy), who will put Helen and Sam to the test.

Burton also stated that he wanted to deepen the story of Mrs. Reed and embrace the universe of the series. “With such an actor, we can dream big about the future“, he enthuses.

Casting and characters that are engaging

Keira Knightley and Ben Whishaw’s critically acclaimed chemistry is one of the series’ strengths. Their friendly and unwavering relationship, characterized by unwavering loyalty, won over the public. “This is first and foremost a story of friendship, loyalty and sacrifice,” Burton emphasizes.

An exceptional cast, including Tracey Ullman, Andrew Codge and Kathryn Hunter, helped create memorable characters that oscillate between gray areas and bursts of humanity.

What should we expect next?

Season 2 promises to deepen the world of Black Doves, moving away from the wintry setting of the first season to explore new horizons. “Depending on the schedules, it will be impossible to have anything ready for next Christmas. So I think that Christmas is definitely not coming back. But it will be interesting to see them out of their winter coats“, – says Burton.

So you’ll have to be patient: filming is scheduled for 2025, with a release expected the following year. In the meantime, you can still watch Black Doves Season 1, which is still available on Netflix.
