Total fish production has reached an estimated value of $472 billion, with a boost from aquaculture; Despite this, there has been an increase in predatory fishing and a decrease in sustainable fish stocks
According to a report published by., for the first time in history the global production of cultivated aquatic foods has exceeded the catch of wild fish Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The result occurs, however, in a worrying scenario: the continuous increase of predatory fishing and the reduction of sustainably managed fish stocks. The data is part of the study “The state of fisheries and aquaculture in the world”.
According to the document, total fish and aquaculture production reached a record 223 million tons, with an estimated value of $472 billion. The growth was mainly driven by aquaculturewhich today represents 51% of the world production of aquatic animals.
The report also highlights that 63% of cultivated aquatic products come from continental waters, while 37% come from marine and coastal areas. However, FAO warns that sustainable management of wild fish stocks is still far from ideal, putting environmental balance at risk.
Another relevant figure is female participation in the sector: women represent 24% of fisheries and aquaculture workers, an increase of 3% compared to 2022, as well as making up 62% of the workforce in fish processing. Asia maintains its global leadership, concentrating over 70% of aquatic animal production and 90% of aquaculture.
