After Santos’ withdrawal, Fortaleza will face US teams in the pre-season

Confirmed in the Orlando Cup, Laion awaits the definition of second opponent in the friendly tournament

After Santos announced its withdrawal from participation in the Orlando Cup, a pre-season friendly tournament, this Friday (27), the competition will undergo changes. Fortaleza, the only remaining team confirmed for the event, will face Miami United, who have replaced Atlético Nacional, Colombia, and another United States team to be determined. Information about Laion’s new opponent was released by Sports PEOPLE.

In a statement, the Sao Paulo club explained that the decision not to participate in the preparatory tournament was taken following the withdrawal of Atlético Nacional. According to Santos, the decline in competition has shown a reduction in technical quality. Another factor, according to Alvinegro, is the lack of confirmation of the broadcast of the competition via digital and television platforms in Brazil. Santos announced that Orlando Cup organizers have been informed of the withdrawal.

With the withdrawal of Santos and Atlético Nacional, to facilitate the logistics and organization of the event, Miami United took the place of the Colombians and another North American team is expected to take the place of the Brazilian. Contacted by the organizers, Fortaleza confirmed her participation and commitment to the pre-season event in the United States.

Check out the Orlando Cup score:

“We were informed this Friday by the management of Santos FC that they have decided not to participate in the Orlando Cup – Pro Series and not to carry out the pre-season in the United States. This decision took us by surprise, especially considering that we organize the event from July, together with the sponsors, broadcasters and the logistical structuring of the three invited teams, including the definition of the stadiums for the matches. This is an organization that requires months of planning and dedication, and is not something that can be built in a few days or weeks.

Santos FC was invited in August and promptly accepted the invitation to participate in the Orlando Cup – Pro Series. Since then we have participated in several meetings and satisfied all the requests presented. All requests were fulfilled, including reservations at the hotels chosen by the club and the purchase of airline tickets.

It is important to underline that between the parties there is a contract stipulated with pecuniary termination clauses. However, the damage caused by the withdrawal goes beyond the agreed financial value, impacting the credibility and perception of the commitment in the football market.

We also inform Santos fans who purchased tickets for the club’s matches that refunds will be made directly through the Ticketmaster platform.

We would like to recognize and thank Fortaleza EC, led by CEO Marcelo Paz, who maintained their commitment and confirmed their participation in the Orlando Cup – Pro Series. Demonstrating strategic vision and professionalism, the club understands the importance of internationalizing the brand and keeping its word. In addition to Fortaleza, Miami United is also confirmed for the event. We will soon announce the third North American team to replace Santos FC in the competition.

We appreciate everyone’s understanding and reinforce our commitment to providing a high-level event for athletes, clubs and fans at the Orlando Cup – Pro Series.”
