The Pope calls for the cancellation of the debts of the poorest countries

Francis made an appeal during the Angelus prayer

This Wednesday (1st), during the Angelus prayer in the Vatican, Pope Francis launched an appeal for the debts of the poorest countries to be forgiven.

In his speech, the Pontiff recalled that “Pope Saint Paul VI wanted the first day of the year to become the ‘World Day of Peace'”, underlining that this year is characterized, due to the Jubilee, by a particular theme : debt forgiveness.

“The first to forgive debts is God, as we always ask him by praying the Our Father, referring to our sins and committing ourselves to forgiving, in turn, those who offend us”.

According to him, the Jubilee “asks us to translate this amnesty on a social level, so that no person, no family, no people is crushed by debt”. “I therefore encourage the governments of countries with a Christian tradition to set a good example by canceling or reducing the debts of the poorest countries as much as possible” concluded the Pontiff. .
