Fires in California: Biden declares “major disaster”

The fire has caused at least five deaths in a western US state. Thousands of homes were destroyed. There is a lack of energy in large areas. The presidential measure aims to speed up aid. Washington sends tanker planes and helicopters. Five fires continue to rage in the state of California, the largest in the coastal neighborhood of Pacific Palisades, Los Angeles, which has already consumed more than 15,800 acres of forest. The President of the United States, Joe Biden, has issued a Presidential Declaration of Major Disaster regarding the fires that broke out this Wednesday (01/08).

The presidential emergency declaration allows state, tribal and local governments to provide financial assistance to fight fires, offsetting at least 75% of the California government’s expenses to fight the blaze.

Washington also sent five large tankers, ten helicopters and dozens of vehicles to help fight the fire. “We are doing everything, for as long as it takes, to contain these fires […] to make sure we get back to normal,” Biden said.

The fire does not spare Hollywoodians

Driven by strong winds, the fires in California have already caused five deaths, destroyed thousands of homes and put many others at risk, especially in the south of the state. More than 400,000 homes, businesses and others remained without power Wednesday afternoon, and about 13,000 homes are in areas already destroyed or threatened by the flames.

According to police, the Palisades disaster is one of the worst in Los Angeles history, having destroyed more than a thousand homes. At least 70,000 citizens were ordered to evacuate in the area, as well as another 60,000 mainly in Pasadena, Altadena and Sierra Madre.

The fire did not spare Hollywood stars who lived in the luxurious coastal neighborhood, such as Ben Affleck, Mark Hamill and James Woods, who had to abandon their homes. Tom Hanks, Adam Sandler and Reese Witherspoon are also among the illustrious residents of Pacific Palisades.

According to G1, the disaster also forced the cancellation of an event related to the Brazilian film Still Here, for which Fernanda Torres received a Golden Globe. In addition to the actress, director Walter Salles will participate in the session and will be presented by Guillermo del Toro.
