Two years ago, in January 2022, Arte began broadcasting Vigil, a gripping detective series starring Suranne Jones (Gentleman Jack) and Rose Leslie (Game of Thrones). This unique thriller follows Amy Silva, an inspector who must solve a mysterious murder on the nuclear submarine HMS Vigil.
During the investigation, he found himself at the center of a conflict between the local police, the Royal Navy and the British intelligence services.
Vigil returns for Season 2
If the first season of Vigil offered viewers a satisfying ending, with the investigation coming to an end in the last episode, the BBC has decided to offer a second season to the series, which will be released this Thursday, January 9, on Arte.
The detective series was indeed a huge success across the channel, attracting almost 12 million viewers. The English channel was therefore able to convince creator Tom Edge, as well as the two main actresses, Suranne Jones and Rose Leslie, to return for a second round of episodes.
But this time, Vigil is making a change of scenery. Gone are the narrow corridors of the nuclear submarine HMS Vigil, this time two investigators infiltrate the hostile ranks of the Royal Air Force.
When an Air Force prototype fighter jet is damaged during a demonstration in Scotland, killing several soldiers, Amy Silva’s team is tasked with finding the perpetrator.
He travels to the Al-Shawka Joint Air Base in the Wudian Kingdom, a controversial ally in the Persian Gulf, and uncovers a larger conspiracy involving the current regime’s collaboration with the British government and private companies to develop drones.
Season 2 News Center
In an interview with Arte, Vigil creator Tom Edge explained that he wanted to put drones at the center of this season 2, because for him, they are what will differentiate the next wars.
“I have done research on border conflicts, civil wars and arms trade, particularly in the Middle East. The development of war drones caught my attention because they are the weapons of the future“, he confided.
“Convenient and versatile, they are used by the military and police, especially for surveillance. Equipped with cameras, they do the work of infantry at a low cost, while avoiding human losses.”
“I had just finished writing the plot when Russia invaded Ukraine. What I assumed was disintegrating before my eyes, using increasingly sophisticated drones.” Therefore, this new season has a story that is more relevant than ever.
Find new episodes of Vigil Season 2 on Thursdays, January 9 and 16 at 8:55 PM on Arte. The following episodes will be available until April 1 on the arte.tv platform.
