Dennis Villeneuvedirector of the first two films in the franchise Duneannounced that Dune: Part 3 it will be his last work in the universe created by Frank Herbert. In an interview with TheWrapVilleneuve stated that while he still feels inspired by the world of Arrakis, extending his journey in the series beyond the third film would be unsustainable.

My biggest surprise was realizing that I don’t want to run away from Arrakis. I thought that after Part 2 I would need a break, that I would want to write other films or do some things before coming back to Dune Messiah. But the images kept coming to mind, and my appetite for the Arrakis universe remains undimmed. I still want to go back, but just one last time.”

When asked about his intention to direct another film in the franchise, Villeneuve responded: “Yes, but after that it would be harmful.”

Future of the franchise

The third film should continue exploring the trajectory of Paul Atreidesplayed by Timothée Chalametas he grapples with the complexities of his role as Fremen messiah. Details about the plot have not yet been revealed, but the expectation is that the film will bring elements from the book Dune Messiahsecond volume in the Frank Herbert series.

Meanwhile, studio Legendary has yet to confirm the production schedule for Dune: Part 3. However, there are plans for the film to be released before Villeneuve’s next project: an adaptation of the book Nuclear War: A Scenariofrom Annie Jacobsennominated for a Pulitzer Prize in 2024.
