7 science fiction movies set in 2025

Science fiction movies like to immerse us in futuristic worlds and try to give us a glimpse of our future. Thus, the year 2025 is depicted in fiction that predicts certain disturbing aspects of the future, such as the advent of artificial intelligence.

Last year we talked about work in progress in 2024, between Covid-23, a telepathic dog, a hole in the ozone layer, and a sterile world. This year, let’s explore the year 2025 in a movie that predicted nuclear apocalypse, deadly game shows, titanic monsters and the rise of artificial intelligence!

The AlloCiné editorial team and the entire yellow and black team wish you a five-star year and all the best in 2025.

Pacific Rim (2013)

Hitting theaters in July 2013, Pacific Rim depicted an apocalyptic world where humans flying giant robots battled hordes of monstrous creatures from elsewhere. Emerging from the waves, the Kaiju began a war that claimed millions of lives and depleted humanity’s natural resources for years.

To fight them, a new type of weapon was created: giant robots, “Jagers”, controlled simultaneously by two pilots who communicate telepathically using a neural gateway called “Den”. But even the Jaegers seem powerless against the fearsome Kaiju.

While defeat seems inevitable, the armed forces protecting humanity have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes: a former pilot at the end of his rope and a young woman in training who team up to outmaneuver the aging Jaeger. Together, they now represent humanity’s last bastion against the increasingly inevitable apocalypse…

The Repo Men (2010)

The sci-fi thriller Repo Men is definitely worth watching! Directed by Miguel Sapochnik (Game of Thrones), the feature film stars Jude Law, Forest Whitaker, Alice Braga and Liev Schreiber. History clearly takes us to 2025.

Men have been able to prolong and improve the lives of their fellow humans with the help of extremely sophisticated and expensive artificial organs created by a company known as The Union. The dark side of this scientific breakthrough: when the “transplant recipients” can no longer meet their credit terms, the Union sends in its special agents, the repo men.

The latter are responsible for returning the goods without concern for the comfort or survival of their insolvent customers. Remy, one of the best repo men on the market, goes into cardiac arrest and wakes up with a state-of-the-art artificial heart implanted in his chest and an accompanying salty note.

However, this forced intervention has an unintended effect: Remy no longer has the heart to work. When he can’t pay his bills, the Union then assigns its toughest agent, Jake, Remy’s former teammate, to find him and recover his fortune. The hunter became the prey…

her (2014)

In 2014, Spike Jonze envisioned a world where artificial intelligence became a necessary technology. Visionary, even prophetic, it presents a society not too far from our own, especially with the recent rise of these new technologies, both fascinating and dangerous.

The story takes us to Los Angeles in 2025. Theodore Twombly, played by Joaquin Phoenix, a sensitive man with a complex character, is inconsolable after a difficult breakup. Then he acquired a state-of-the-art computer program that can adapt to each user’s personality.

While running the system, he meets ‘Samantha’, an intelligent, intuitive and amazingly funny woman. Samantha’s needs and desires grow and develop, just like Theodore’s, and slowly they fall in love…

Beyond the Mountains (2015)

Directed by Chinese filmmaker Jia Zhangke in 2015, Beyond the Mountains is undoubtedly the most realistic film of 2025. More precisely, the story unfolds in 3 times, from 1999 to 2025.

The story follows Tao, a young girl from Fenyang who is in love with her two childhood friends, Zang and Lianzi. Gas station owner Zhang has a promising future, while Liang works in a coal mine.

Torn between two men, Tao will have to make a choice that will seal her life and her future son, Dollar. Over the course of a quarter of a century, between China undergoing profound changes and Australia as the promise of a better life, these characters’ hopes, loves and disappointments face their fates.

“By talking about a bright future, it influenced the Chinese people’s vision. Propaganda is always ‘positive’ in China. The ideal of the whole society is modeled around utopian values: we all work for a future that we cannot see. But definitely radiant”– Jia Zhanke explained the world 10 years ago.

Zebraman 2 (2011)

Directed by Japan’s madcap Takashi Miike, Zebraman 2 is a sci-fi romp that’s all lit but has a visionary side. The filmmaker takes us to 2025. 15 years after chasing aliens off the face of the earth, Shinichi Ichikawa, better known as Zebraman, wakes up with amnesia.

He discovers that the mayor of Tokyo, now called Zebra City, has pacified the metropolis by imposing a new law: Zebra Time. For 5 minutes every day, residents can satisfy their needs under police surveillance (a bit like the American Nightmare saga).

However, Zebraman realizes that reality is less idyllic than it seems and that Mary and her daughter, the venomous Zebra Queen, have dark designs. Will he be able to stop them? In this work of raw and graphic savagery, Takashi Miike predicted the disturbing rise of trivialized violence in our societies in 2025.

Future Gladiator (1983)

A sort of no-holds-barred joke, Future Gladiator is from Joe D’Amato, the prolific Italian director behind many horror films. In 1983, he offered us his vision of 2025 with this amazing production, a cross between Mad Max, The Hunger Games, Battle Royale and The Running Man.

The story takes place in 2025, 50 years after the end of World War III. This conflict ended in an absolutely bloody nuclear holocaust, and New York is one of the few cities still intact. The survivors participate in a deadly game, “Endgame”; It involves gladiator fights in a giant arena, all developed by television channels.

One of the participants, Ron Shannon, is being hunted by hunters. Their leader is named Kurt Karnak, the hero’s former best friend. The latter meets a young telepathic woman, Lilith, who rescues him from his rival.

In return, she asks him to protect her. He and his loved ones are persecuted by a dictatorship organized after the apocalypse. They are isolated in a polluted ghetto and all have the power of telepathy.

Ron Shannon agrees to escort them outside of New York to a quieter and safer place. From this point on, the hero must create a team of mercenaries to provide protection during the journey. Unfortunately, this is prevented by obstacles that block their path: blind monks, nomadic predators or Karnak…

Black Panther 2 (2022)

This detail has definitely been forgotten by the general public, but Black Panther 2 is set in 2025! The MCU had to make this leap in time due to Thanos’ finger snapping in Infinity War that wiped out half of humanity before they came back 5 years later to save Iron Man and the Avengers during the last game. Note that Thor 4 also takes place in 2025.
