Botafogo scores in injury time, eliminates Ponte Preta and advances to the Copinha round of 16


A late free kick sent Glorioso into the next phase




Botafogo advanced to the round of 16 of the Copa São Paulo de Futebol Júnior after beating Ponte Preta 1-0, this Tuesday (14), at the Arena Plínio Marin, in Votuporanga. From a free kick, number 10 Charles scored the goal in injury time that guaranteed the Glorioso the standings.

Now Botafogo will face Criciúma, who eliminated Mirassol, in the Copinha round of 16. The clash is scheduled for Thursday (16th), with no time and place defined at the moment. Teams from Rio and Santa Catarina will compete for a place in the quarter-finals of the competition.

Botafogo presses and scores a late goal

Ponte Preta entered the field with three defenders. With their opponent more defensive, Botafogo had possession of the ball and created chances to open the scoring in the first half. In the 14th minute Charles risks a shot from the edge of the area and forces Angelo to save. The San Paolo team managed to defend themselves well during the stage and avoided major dangers from Glorioso.

In the second half Ponte Preta came into the game more. However, Botafogo had the best opportunities of the match. Charles took a risk from distance and hit the crossbar 14 minutes into the second half. Subsequently the goalkeeper Angelo made two good saves. The Rio team continued to press for the goal without thinking about taking it to penalties. Until, after a free kick, in the 46th minute, Charles shot hard into the goalkeeper’s corner, who stretched out but was unable to prevent the goal.
