It only took a few days for Guillaume Canet’s thriller Ad Vitam to become the world’s most watched movie on Netflix. The official website of the Tudum platform reveals that the feature film is currently number one in 31 countries (including France) and is in the top ten out of a total of 90 countries.
In just three days, Ad Vitam had a total of 17.1 million reads and 28 million watch hours. Consequently, this total allows it to dominate the foreign-language film ranking, but also the film ranking in all countries combined.
In this way, Ad Vitam surpasses the audience of the Franco-American animated film Comme des bêtes 2, which saw 15 million subscribers this week, or Carry-On – one of the biggest hits of all time on Netflix – these days 7, 2 million users have seen it.
A record soon for Ad Vitam on Netflix?
According to an analysis by specialist newsletter Netflix & Chiffres, this is the best start for a French film since June 2021. Even better, current projections allow it to be considered for a place in the international top 10 of all time, provided the audience doesn’t decline too drastically in the coming days.
Keep in mind that Guillaume Canet, who also co-wrote and produced the film, suggested that a sequel would be possible if successful. Ad Vitam’s excellent start therefore increases the chances of the project’s implementation and also confirms the strong international reputation of the French player.
French movies are a hit on Netflix
Ad Vitam tells the story of Frank Lazarev, a former GIGN member who has come to terms with his past. The latter decides to do everything to save his pregnant wife from the clutches of a group of kidnappers. For filming, Guillaume Canet underwent intense training to perform almost all the stunts himself.
Note that this week two more French films will appear in the global ranking of Netflix. The comedy Loups-Garous with Franck Dubosc thus reached 900,000 views, while the film Sous la Seine further confirmed its success with an additional 800,000 views on the platform.
