Although Chris Evans is eager to return to Marvel, his Hollywood career continues away from the superhero saga, with the new Netflix movie “The Gray Man.”
This new action movie was released in the early hours of July 22, 2022, and according to ‘Collider’, it is the most expensive movie on the streaming platform to date, having cost around $200 million to produce.
Based on the book of the same name by Mark Greaney, it is about two diametrically opposed spies. The first is called Court Gentry, better known as Six (Ryan Gosling), who after a mission discovers the dark and illegal secrets hidden by the CIA’s Sierra division.
While the second is Lloyd Hansen, an assassin and psychopath who is sent to stop him before he can reveal sensitive information to the world.
While trying to escape, Six uncovers more secrets from her former spy agency, putting a price on her head. Fortunately, she has an ally, agent Dani Miranda (Ana de Armas), who provides her with the support she needs to survive.
The ending of this movie is more complicated than it seems and could leave clues for a possible sequel. Below we explain how Netflix’s ‘The Gray Man’ ends, but be aware that you will find spoilers.
‘The Gray Man’: Netflix movie’s ending explained
At the end of “The Gray Man”, the CIA acquits Denny Carmichael, Suzanne Brewer and Dani Miranda after they blame all the problems on the late Loyd Hansen. The plan was that the bosses thought the killer went too far in the search for Six and apparently it paid off.
But Suzanne’s real goal is to tip the scales in her favor, since by killing Lloyd and destroying the USB with the encrypted information, she has the same level of power as Carmichael.
Meanwhile, Six manages to escape the hospital after receiving medical attention to go rescue Claire, who is being held hostage in a heavily guarded facility.
While it may seem like it’s all part of a conspiracy by Carmichael and Suzanne, there’s actually quite a bit of evidence that they’re working for one or more people pulling the strings from the shadows.
Suzanne doesn’t seem very informed, but Carmichael knows she’s employing someone who wants to eliminate all Sierra agents to prevent any leaks, not caring much about collateral damage.
“The Gray Man” makes it clear that corruption exists everywhere, especially in spy agencies where rules and protocols can be broken for almost any reason.
While Six constantly runs into allies, it’s a fact that she can’t fully trust them if she wants to escape the CIA alive.
The ending of “The Gray Man” suggests that the characters must remain curious and skeptical, or risk being betrayed by those they trust most.
‘the gray man‘: will the Netflix movie get a sequel?
The ending of Netflix’s “The Gray Man” was very open ended. With the USB damaged, Six and Dani have no evidence to charge Carmichael. Lloyd is dead and Suzanne is slowly gaining more power. The Netflix movie has not revealed who the character with the most power and influence is, which might be expected for a possible sequel.
Considering Six, Ryan Gosling, is back in the running, the film doesn’t resolve a few loose ends, which could be entirely intentional, since according to “Deadline,” the Russo brothers intend to be “The Gray Man”. is the beginning of a new cinematic saga.
Fans will have to wait a while to find out if “The Gray Man” is successful enough for Netflix to approve a sequel or more. If that happens, they will learn the fate of Six, Dani, Carmichael and Suzanne.
