If there’s one thing to know about Peaky Blinders creator Stephen Knight, it’s that he’s no slouch. While the Peaky Blinders movie for Netflix is still in production, the British writer and director has plenty of side projects.
On the one hand, season 2 of his series Rogue Heroes is currently airing on CANAL+, while on the other hand, Pablo Larraín’s film with Maria Angelina Jolie, which he wrote, will be released in French cinemas in February.
From the creator of ‘Peaky Blinders’ to the world of boxing
And it’s not over yet, as a new Steven Knight series is coming to Disney+ very soon. It’s A Thousand Blows, a 6-episode historical drama set in the underbelly of 1880s London, should literally give us an uppercut.
The series follows Jamaican Hezekiah Moscow, who finds himself immersed in the violent maelstrom of the post-industrial revolution in London’s East End. The young man was fascinated by secret boxing fights, which were very popular at that time.
He meets Mary Carr, the leader of the Forty Elephants, a notorious gang of women who fight every day for his survival. While he is training to fight, he confronts Sugar Goodson, a great boxer who he quickly becomes a rival for, outside the ring.
A Thousand Blows can be credited to the excellent cast, who seem to have given their all to carry the story. Hezekiah Moskow is thus played by Malachi Kirby, a young talent known for his roles in EastEnders and Doctor Who, who also featured in Steve McQueen’s Little Axe and The Chef and Scandalously Yours.
Mary Carr is played by Erin Doherty, who notably played Princess Anne in The Crown, and Sugar Goodson is played with muscle by a transformed Stephen Graham. Fans of the Peaky Blinders gang should love Steven Knight’s new story, which will be available on February 21st on Disney+.
