Four years after The Invisible Man, writer-director Leigh Whannell tackles the wolf figure with The Wolf Man. The story tells about a family affected by a car accident and the transformation of a father who is contaminated by a strange creature.
For this new version, the filmmaker wanted to offer a story embedded in reality, inspired by two major horror films: David Cronenberg’s Flight and Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining.
On AlloCiné, Wolf Man has a press rating of 3.4 out of 5 (compared to 3.8 out of 5 for The Invisible Man), while its audience rating averages 2.5* out of 5 (compared to 3. 5 of 5). invisible man).
What did viewers think of Wolf Man?
They liked it
Alice025 (3.5 out of 5): ”A rather intimate, but still interesting and original reinterpretation of the werewolf movie, already covered several times (…) Christopher Abbott is convincing in his role, visually dark (sometimes a little too much?), but the script makes us pause. And the concept of family is pretty well taken.“
Lecinedes (3.5 out of 5): “The sound and sound effects work is amazing and comes with a tension that boosts the adrenaline well. The film also examines the transformation and self-mutilation aspect of Cronenberg’s Flight, and we can turn a blind eye once or twice to the most fragile.“
ConFucAmuS (3 of 5): “Thus, Wolf Man is a small surprise that benefits from its director’s talent for creating a depressing atmosphere and suffers from his shortcomings as a screenwriter. Le Loup Garou will wait for his rebirth. But there he was not far from being out of the woods.”
They didn’t like it
Cool_92 (2.5 out of 5): “It is disappointing. The film tries to innovate, preferring heavy atmosphere and more and more tension by abandoning action and plot. It is partially successful, but we are still very sad. Nothing much happens. The metamorphosis is quite well done, but spreading it throughout the film is a risky bet. In terms of writing, it is not good, situations are seen and discussed.”
Movie Memories (2.5 out of 5): “Unfortunately, it’s a shame that this final version of Wolf Man provides decent entertainment without risk. Or rather without using his brilliant ideas to the end.”
Simply Loïc (2.5 out of 5): ”The film says nothing and tries to find a rhythm. A very average movie that still has great ideas.”
Pastek (0.5 out of 5): “Leaving the movie, what a disappointment. Bad and predictable scenario, only ultra-loud voices to try to jump us. So many confusing inconsistencies for a good story. I knew exactly what would happen and when.“
at the end
While the press has been positive about Wolf Man, Lee Whannell’s film seems to be dividing audiences. Confidents emphasize the intimate side, its originality and work on realistic special effects. The most persistent criticize the feature film for being too disjointed in rhythm and not adhering to its ideas.
