Mato Grosso: 20 municipalities have declared a state of emergency after heavy rains in the state

The rains occurred from the 13th; in the first 15 days of the year 80% of the healthcare number for the entire month of January 2024 was accumulated

At least 20 cities in Mato Grosso have declared a state of emergency after the heavy rains that hit the region starting on the 13th, causing floods and inundations. The State monitors the affected areas and provides support with the distribution of basic food baskets, mattresses and clothing.

According to the Center for Meteorological Forecasts and Climate Studies of the Institute for Space Research (Inpe), in the first half of January alone the average rainfall recorded in the state was 171.4 millimetres, a value equal to 80% of the average rainfall rainfall for the entire month of January 2024 was 215 mm.

In Paranatinga the rivers overflowed, forcing more than 70 families to leave their homes. Some will not even be able to return to their properties, which have had structures damaged in the floods.

“We are providing assistance, initially more focused on humanitarian aid so that the affected people are welcomed, receive food, mattresses, so that life returns to normal as quickly as possible,” Colonel César Brum, Undersecretary of Civil Protection, told TV Centro America, affiliate of Rede Globo.

In a note, the State Government specifies that it has installed a Situation Room to coordinate assistance to the municipalities affected by the rains, composed of the Civil House and the Secretariats of State for the Environment, Public Security, Infrastructure and Logistics and Social Assistance and Citizenship, as well as Energisa, the energy concessionaire in Mato Grosso.

The municipalities that have declared a state of emergency are:

  • Rio Branco;
  • Jump in the sky;
  • Paranatinga;
  • Cuiabá;
  • New Nazaré;
  • Upper Paraguay, Luciara;
  • Chapada dos Guimarães;
  • Good Water;
  • Arenapoli;
  • Itauba;
  • New Brazilland;
  • Villa Rica;
  • Confresa;
  • Rondolandia;
  • Cocalinho;
  • Serra Nova Dourada;
  • New Santo Antonio;
  • New São Joaquim;
  • Porto Alegre do Norte.

Hundreds of people were left homeless, but were sent to city shelters or moved to relatives’ homes. According to the state government, there are still three families in temporary accommodation established in Paranatinga municipality, one of the worst affected. Fortunately there is no news of missing people.

To date, 1,120 food and hygiene and cleaning baskets have been delivered, as well as hundreds of mattresses, sleeping kits (pillow, sheet, pillowcase), blankets, water tanks and filters and tons of clothes.

“The government continues to monitor municipalities and issue warnings and guidance to municipalities through Civil Protection, which also assists municipalities in surveying damage and declaring an emergency situation,” he said in a statement.
