Takeshi Kitano is back and ready to smash things. The Japanese director, as well as an actor, screenwriter and DJ in his free time, is having fun again. Prime Video will indeed stream his upcoming film, titled Broken Rage, this coming February. At the age of 78, this cinephile is not ready to hang up the camera, and proves it with the new work presented by the platform as a “hybrid”, since it is divided into two very different parts.
The first half is structured as a police thriller that follows a killer caught between law enforcement and the yakuza, while the second half humorously retells the same story through the use of parody. The Japanese director found the perfect partner in Amazon to test this new genre mix. The latter never hid his desire to make a violent film in which he can integrate a little comedy. And it’s done now.
True to form, Kitano writes, directs and headlines Broken Rage. In this case, he faces Tadanobu Asano (Shogun), Nao Omori (Kubi) and Shido Nakamura (Innocence). While waiting for the first images, subscribers and fans of this great man can meet on February 13 on the platform to discover the film.

Kitano didn’t say the last word
Last September, Broken Rage made headlines by becoming the first Japanese film from the platform to be selected for a prestigious film festival (in this case Venice). The thriller/comedy was actually presented without competition, where it was very well received. Despite its relatively short duration (only 62 minutes), the feature film It charmed critics who found it particularly funny And well delivered. It’s enough to announce only good things for its streaming release next February.
But we’re also waiting for news from Cuba, another 2021 film by Kitano that currently doesn’t have a release date despite making a notable appearance at Cannes in 2023. Based on the real-life Hono-ji incident, in which the famous warrior Oda Nobunaga was killed at a temple in Kyoto in 1582.
