Released in 1984, Ivan Reitman’s comedy was an instant success that has never been denied since. So don’t wait to see Ghostbusters (again), which will soon leave the Netflix catalog.
What is it about?
The Parapsychology of Peter, Raymond, and Egon Research. Fired by the dean of the faculty, they decide to create a society dedicated to ghost hunting. Its name: Ghostbusters. Success knocks on their door so hard that soon they are working on an assembly line.
Ghostbusters, a film written by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis; Directed by Ivan Reitman with Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Ernie Hudson and Sigourney Weaver.
Eternal comedy
Ghostbusters centers on three researchers at New York’s Columbia University who specialize in parapsychology. They offer a public service that is exceptional to say the least… exorcism! It goes without saying that with such excellent pacing, casting, and on-screen rendering (yes, those special effects were insane in 1984) Ghostbusters became an instant pop culture phenomenon. And one of the most famous franchises in cinema.
Also, the film came out at a time when everyone involved were kings of the comedy world. Because this was a time when comedians from SNL (Saturday Night Live, a historical show that needs no introduction) were real locomotives for the box office. and which included Dan Aykroyd and Bill Murray, as well as Harold Ramis, who contributed his pen to the writing team.
And if Ghostbusters worked so well, it’s because the movie is a perfect combination of these different ingredients: comedy, action, and a touch of horror, even if Ghostbusters isn’t strictly speaking a horror comedy. It is also a film that is suitable for all age groups and can be watched with the family, giving it a universal character.
With its iconic characters (hello Venkman), its costumes found even in Stranger Things, its creatures, and its concept, it became a milestone in pop culture history. Even for those who haven’t seen the film, it’s impossible not to have heard of it or not recognize its image, its costumes and even the inevitable buffet-tout!
Ghostbusters leaves the Netflix catalog on July 31st.
