The feature film ‘Cine Morocco’ opens the new house, which also features a restaurant and bar, as well as a space for concerts and parties
In the vicinity of Praça da República, a car park has undergone eight months of renovations to make way for an increasingly rare space in the capital: a street cinema. “This room is the materialization of a dream. It brings welcome, celebration and exchange between cinema and public. We want to enhance the sector and bring back to the center the possibility of living and experiencing the cinema we believe in”, he underlines Paolo Vidiz, one of the members of Cineclube Cortina (Rua Araújo, 62), together with Marcelo Sarti and Rapha Barreto. The space will officially open this Tuesday 26.
Those who enter the staircase from the main door find themselves in front of the various tables in the bar and restaurant that are part of the multicultural space. The big difference, however, is in the basement, where there used to be cars and is now a space with a big screen and 80 folding chairs for watching movies. When the curtains are opened and the chairs removed, the same place can become a space that can accommodate up to 500 people, for concerts (on Thursdays) and parties (on Fridays).
Cinema tickets have a suggested value of R $ 30, but the customer can pay less, more, or not pay at all. Parties and shows have an official price (varies according to the event), but they have a “solidarity fund”: by donating food you pay half the amount.
More than 50 structures were visited by the members of Cortina, who chose it because it is located in the República region and because it is a parking lot, trying to reverse the trend of the place where cinemas have closed over the years, becoming parking lots or churches.
“The synergy of the project with the center, the stage of a great cultural effervescence, is one of the pillars that supports and translates us. We want to be close to an up-to-date, avant-garde public that does not give up on culture”, underlines Sarti. The programming of the films, curated by Letícia Santinon, intends to give priority to works “acclaimed by specialized critics and which escape the traditional cinema circuit”, taking into account important dates or contemporary situations in vogue. The selection will take place on a fortnightly basis. There is also the intention that debates with the directors or creators of the films are frequent, in moments of exchange with the public, making the name of cineclube valid.
The kick-off will be given with the display of Moroccan cinema, by Ricardo Calil, winner of the É Tudo Verdade festival in 2019, which records the deterioration of the place that was once a landmark at Cinelândia in São Paulo and later became a refuge for several homeless families, sparking a series of debates. Even the news will have their space, like the unpublished Peter’s journeywhich presents Cauã Reymond as the former emperor of Brazil.
The cooks Daniela França Pinto and Fernanda Camargo, of Casa Farnel, have been called as consultants for the kitchen of the house. The idea is to propose a menu based on three pillars: immigrants (dishes from Japan, the Middle East or Germany, for example), traditional ones (such as chicken legs) and souvenirs (whether they are those of the chefs, customers or partners).
The 25-meter drinks counter is under the command of Argentina’s Chula Barmaid, known for her artistic performance in serving drinks. “The goal of our bar is for people to experience a scene from a movie when they are at the bar, but not necessarily something that already exists.”
The Cineclube Cortina will officially open today, but the film session will be by invitation only. From Wednesday 27, with screening of the film Moroccan cinema from 7 pm both the big screen and the restaurant bar will be open to the public – on Saturday 30th there will also be a debate with director Ricardo Calil. Sunday 31, at 19:00, it will be possible to attend Peter’s journey – director Laís Bodanzky will participate in a debate with those present.
The parties and shows are organized by researcher Juli Baldi and cultural producer Gabriel Rolim. “We will bet on the diversity of national music, receiving a mix of unreleased shows, well-known names and, most importantly, new artists from different narratives, styles and regions of the country,” emphasizes Juli.
