For this occasion, Julie Giani, who shot a television film with Mathieu Busson, includes the shoes of this figure, which millions of French discovered during the opening ceremony of Paris’s 2024 game.
As part of La Rochelle Fiction Festival, the distribution met with the actor and his co-director to discuss this ambitious project.
Where did the idea of this television movie come from? Why did you want your first fiction at Olympe de Gouges?
Julie Gate : Together with Matthew Bucon, we have been working on many documentaries in the movie in the movie. In 2017, along with the #Metoo and Winstein case, he released the words of women who struck the world of cinema.
The Americans had time, we had a 50/50 collective in France. We have continued making documentaries to talk about women and collectives that make incredible items on the pitch and we are not talking about.

It represents the French Revolution, the Republic. This is our story. It was the beginning of modern feminism. So he sued himself because his story echoes today’s problems.
This is what we are interested in. One of the most representatives of history was one of the most representatives, in particular, thanks to the declaration of women’s rights. Initially, we do not want a television film specifically around Olympe de Gouges, but around women’s clubs.
We believe that it is not just one woman or one figure, but one second and movement. But for the general public it is always easier to go to one figure.
Matthew Buson : A little known, he is the only one who has his bust in the National Assembly. This is the only one who was guilling for political reasons.
Jungle : It was also important for us to make a modern movie. We didn’t want to make a historical film that is very bulk or very school. We wanted people to take fiction.
Our goal was that today a young girl could find herself in the story of Olympus and at the same time to see everything that is happening in the world today.
In the phone you have a double hat for the director and actor. What has changed during the shooting? And why did you make that choice?
Jungle : I think if they were not authorized, I would not agree to do so. Co-sale with Matthew, it was really important and it is a real pleasure. We are very filled. There was something that was very obvious.
Mb : And then Olympe de Gouges is not just an extra role. This is an investment that is Julie Port. To get into the skin of Olympus, it makes sense and it is not absurd.
Jungle : What convinced me was that I told myself that it would go faster. We didn’t have much time to make films, it would allow me not to explain to another actor. We also had huge pressure.
We wanted to do something that is successful, and it respects him. We had no right to be wrong. At first, I was exhausted because I was paying everything, and then I thought I had to do Mathew. It was difficult.
Mb : Julie was really in all plans and in all sequences, so she needed a lot of work.
What was the biggest difficulty in filming?
Mb : Difficulty was general. We need to make a timely film, which was allocated by the means we had. In every position, people must have been an inventor and have to find decisions.
We supported the already existing kits. We have done the power of weaknesses. But he is convinced that the lack of time was the most difficult. In the end, he does not feel on the screen.
Jungle : Everyone tells us that it is impossible to see it. But we really experienced a lack of time. We have everything adapted to make it timely. We made a choice that was in our obligations and our values. For example, we didn’t want to do it.
Renting wigs is very expensive. We didn’t want it because we wanted it to be modern. So it fell well. So we made a choice. After that, I still had trouble: corsets. Women with a corset were completely hampered.
I had problems after filming. Having a corset a day is one thing, but for a month a corset is another. At the end, I really got back. I realized that Corset was still a form of violence. Yes, it was all above everything.
Mb : And everything was done together. The whole team merged and was looking for decisions. We also wanted to create a joint team. And we managed to do it. We are proud of this. People were also happy to work on a film that tells the story of Olympus and which is performing his word.
How did you get ready for television? Did you investigate? Do you have consultations for historians?
Mb : We have read a lot. We also looked at the drawings on it. We watched the films that were shot to determine what was done well and what we didn’t want to be rebuilt.
It was a great training. Along with the team, we knew that we had to get everything in 19 and half of the films. So we need to know for a minute what to do during the day.
Jungle : It was interesting to work on Olympic story because there are many things. It was very interesting, but at the same time, we also wanted to blur the things. Fiction masters history and we say the history of women, but we are not historians. We wanted to do more modern things.
The television film shows that Olympus was a feminist before the hour, but he was also a loving mother. Was it important to show this aspect?
Jungle : Yes, it was important. In addition, it is his fault. It is clear that with him all his principles are shattered. If it is necessary to make passengers, he agrees. His last letter, which is authentic, addressed his son.
It was something strong. But he really interfered with the piston, so he was a little more protected and so that he had a better position. But he refused to do so. He was much more radical and he wanted to go into an armed battle.
