Screening before ‘Nope’ in the US, a teaser for Christopher Nolan’s next film ‘Oppenheimer’ is now online, a year ahead of its theatrical release. A minimalistic video reminiscent of “The Dark Knight” or “Inception”.
This will surely be one of the most anticipated movies of 2023. But today it is the headlines. And again from July 22, the date of Knop’s American release, where its teaser was shown before the program and exclusively in theaters, showing Jordan Peele’s Last Child. Less than a week later, the first images of Oppenheimer’s next Christopher Nolan opus have finally surfaced online.
And this thanks to a live video, in a countdown that shows the time that separates us not from its release (scheduled for July 19, 2023 in France and two days later in the United States), but from the first anniversary. A nuclear test that took place on July 16, 1945. Because this biographical film is dedicated to the physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, whose work led to the birth and use of the atomic bomb at the end of World War II.
“The world is changing”
The character is played by Cillian Murphy, and this will be his fifth appearance in a film by the English filmmaker, after three Batman films, Inception and Dunkirk. But we see very little of it in this both minimalist and explosive teaser, which mixes several images of atoms and destructive fire with images of a feature film, partly shot in black and white.
“The world is changing, it is reforming”We hear in this teaser, reminiscent of the first of The Dark Knight, Inception or Interstellar, which revealed very little of the story, sometimes preferring snippets of dialogue (for the beginning of Batman) or sequences of shots without the slightest. Word, intrigue and setting the tone.
Between a biopic and a thriller?
If Robert Downey Jr., Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Florence Pugh, Rami Malek, Kenneth Branagh, Josh Hartnett or even Benny Safdia were expected in this five-star cast, none of them appear here. Because Christopher Nolan, as usual, goes above and beyond to create atmosphere. And he hints here that, despite the biopic genre he’s tackling for the first time (after being attached to a film about producer and director Howard Hughes), Oppenheimer will have the look of a thriller.
Which wouldn’t be more surprising, given the director’s penchant for detective stories (even when he’s adapting a Batman story). And the countdown is in the middle of this teaser, which reminds us how much the Brit knows how to set our mouths and intrigue us. See you in theaters in less than a year with this film distributed by Universal, which welcomed the filmmaker with open arms after his divorce from Warner.
