We review everything announced about the most ambitious film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since its inception. What are the ‘Secret Wars’?
We were waiting to find out more titles from Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe at San Diego Comic Con in 2022 and, suddenly, the lord and master of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige announced Phase 5 in full and gave us two brutal surprises for Phase 6: ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty’ and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’.
Two ‘Avengers’ movies in less than 6 months will be responsible for closing the renowned ‘Multiverse Saga’which includes Phases 4, 5 and 6 and will have Kang the Conqueror as Thanos’ replacement in the role of the main villain.
The new Avengers movies are planned for 2025, and until then there are over a dozen new Marvel superhero movies and series on Disney+ that will introduce us to new characters and lay the foundations for what will be the great UCM event with Avengers, Young Avengers, Fantastic Four and… The X-Men?
‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ release date
In the Phase 6 calendar there are only 3 projects marked at the moment. ‘The Fantastic Four’ (November 8, 2024), ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty’ (May 2, 2025) and the movie/event that will close the phase and the Multiverse Saga: ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’, which will be released on November 7, 2025.
According to the release schedule unveiled by Feige at Comic Con, there is still 8 gaps left to fill. Among them could be the presentation of the Mutants in the MCUkey characters for the ‘Secret Wars’ of the comic, and the super-villain Doctor Dooma character associated with The Fantastic Four but who seems essential when adapting this story.
‘Avengers: Secret Wars’, Synopsis. What are Secret Wars?
The original ‘Secret Wars’ story was published in Marvel Comics in 1984. With a script by Jim Shooter and art by Mike Zeck and Bob Layton. Tied to a line of toys that were released simultaneously, ‘Secret Wars’ had an incredibly simple premise: a cosmic entity known as the Beyonder gathered together several of Earth’s greatest Marvel heroes and villains and placed them in a universe called “Battleworld” to battle each other., for your own enjoyment. Despite the simplicity, the story was a bestseller that earned a sequel and had a brutal impact on the future of the Marvel Universe ever since.
In 2015 there was a new version of ‘Secret Wars’, a kind of reboot, in the form of a comic mega-event about the destruction of the Marvelite multiverse. Led by Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribíc, Marvel’s greatest heroes couldn’t stop the incursions (a concept that we have already been able to learn about in ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’) will cause the destruction of the different universes among themselves. This even meant that Earth-616, the “original” universe of Marvel superheroes, collided with the ultimate universe, known as Earth-1610. By combining with other alternate realities, a new ‘Battleworld’ was formed and existence was maintained thanks to Doctor Doom (who naturally became the Emperor of this patchwork realm of previous realities). Finally, Mr. Fantastic was able to restore Earth-616 (although with some alterations and changes).
It remains to be seen which of the two versions Marvel will adapt to its UCM, but everything indicates that it will be the second, betting on the clash between universes. Let us remember that the union of Phases 4, 5 and 6 is called The Multiverse Sagaso it would be a surprise if it was done otherwise.
‘Avengers: Secret Wars’, Cast
There is no one confirmed for ‘Avengers: Secret Wars. NO ONE. Honestly, we have no idea who the main Avengers group will be, not even their main villain. Will it be Kang the Conqueror? beyond? Doctor Doom?
Logic tells us that Kang will break the multiverse in ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty’, and that Doctor Doom will be the one trying to “fix” it in his own way in ‘Secret Wars’. But we have already seen that Doctor Strange, the TVA of ‘Loki’ and the Quantum World from Ant-Man are going to be very important to this multiversal plot. And Doctor Doom is a villain long associated with ‘The Fantastic Four’, so we will be discovering details of characters and plot as ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’, the second season of ‘Loki’ and the rest are released of Marvel projects.
The Eternals and cosmic entities like the Celestials or Eternityseen in ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’, could be a differentiating element, and the renewal of The Avengers could lead to a new group of ‘Young Avengers’ formed by Kamala Khan (Ms Marvel), Yelena Belova, Kate Bishop, America Chavez, Cassie Lang, Wanda Wiccan and Speed’s children, Ironheart and, look at thisIron Lada teenage version of Kang the Conqueror who travels back in time to try and stop himself, creating the Young Avengers.
The Fantastic Four should also have a leading rolesince in the comics it is their leader Reed Richards who manages to put an end to the mess and keep Universe 616 alive, and it is normal that one of the gaps to be revealed in the Phase 6 calendar is for the first X-Men movie in the UCM, which is already rumored to be titled ‘The Mutants’.
