Actress Charlize Theron (“The Old Guard”) joined director Alfonso Cuarón (“Gravity”) in the production of “Jane”, an alternative “cinebiography” by science fiction writer Philip K. Dick in development at Amazon Studios. In addition to co-producing the film, Cuarón is expected to direct and Theron will star in the title role.
The project centers on how the writer’s life and work were influenced by the death of his twin sister, Jane, when they were both children, and how it inspired him to imagine alternate realities in which the dead remained alive and the story unfolded differently – as in the book “O Homem do Castelo Alto”, which won the Hugo Award (the science fiction Oscar) in 1963 and was adapted in 2015 into one of the most popular series on Amazon Prime Video .
“The story of ‘Jane’ has been with me for as long as I can remember,” said Isa Hackett, daughter of the screenwriter and co-producer of the film. “Jane, my father’s twin sister who died a few weeks after birth, was at the center of her universe. Suitable for a man with a unique imagination, this film will challenge the conventions of a biopic and embrace the alternate reality that Philip K. Dick so desperately wanted to achieve – the one in which his beloved sister survived beyond six weeks of life. It is his story that we will tell, we will see it through the lens of the imagination. [de K. Dick]. There is no better way to honor him than to grant his wish, if only for the screen. “
Other famous productions inspired by Dick’s stories include “Blade Runner” (1982) with Harrison Ford, “Total Recall” (1990) with Arnold Schwarzenegger and “Minority Report” (2002), with Tom Cruise. Many of his stories also inspired the anthological series “Electric Dreams”, dedicated to his work on the Amazon platform.
For now, there are no predictions for the premiere of “Jane”.
In addition to this film, another Philip K. Dick production is also in development: “Only Appparent Real”, focusing on a hazy period in his life in the 1970s.
