Chris Cuomo has a new concert, but how many fewer people watch News Nation in prime time than CNN?

Chris Cuomo is taking steps to return to television. After being fired from CNN in December 2021 for helping his older brother, Andrew Cuomo, try to overcome several public sexual harassment allegations, the infamous reporter has been absent from the airwaves most of the time. Now he’s got a new prime-time gig with Nexstar’s NewsNation, a more opinionated news option, but how many fewer people watch the channel in prime time than his old hey network.

Apparently a lot, based on a 2022 audience breakdown for IndieWire. They report that NewsNation averages around 50,000 prime time viewers, while CNN receives an average total of 762,000, part of the key demographic of 25- to 54-year-olds.

Presumably, the hope is that Chris Cuomo will boost NewsNation numbers when his show premieres in the fall. IndieWire notes that the 51-year-old managed to do just that during his tenure at CNN. Your old show early evening (which lasted four years) averaged nearly 2 million viewers every night in 2020, with key demographics accounting for around a quarter of that total. It dropped to 1.334 million in 2021, but this is believed to be due to the fact that it is not a presidential election year.

At the time of this writing, it’s not even clear which prime-time slot Chris Cuomo will take over NewsNation this fall. Currently, Marni Hughes is at 8pm, Dan Abrams is at 9pm, and former CNN Ashleigh Banfield is at 10pm. Dan Abrams Live on July 26, the father of three officially announced that he would join the network. Chris Cuomo also spoke at length about the allegations involving his brother that got him fired from CNN in the first place.

In particular, he allegedly used his media contacts to try to defuse the growing scandal surrounding former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. There was also talk of Chris leading strategic meetings and making better optics statements on behalf of his brother. However, in turn, he reassured Abrams that he “never contacted” other news outlets to try to influence the coverage of his brother. Furthermore, he indicated that the context of his calls to friends and colleagues was very different from what it appeared to be.

However, Chris Cuomo still has an important bone to discuss with CNN regarding his ouster. He accused the network of wrongful dismissal and of creating a smear campaign against him in an arbitration case in March, where he demanded $ 125 million in compensation. (It is not known to the public whether the former employer and employee resolved the matter privately in the following months or if he will eventually go to court.) And that wasn’t the first time their employment relationship was put to the test. After contracting COVID-19 in 2020, Cuomo had to retract the comments he made about not being very fond of his work situation at the time.

However, the new post from the former CNN on NewsNation says that at least it hasn’t finished reporting the news yet. We are waiting for confirmation of when his prime time show will premiere in the 2022 TV schedule, at which point we’ll see if the losing network numbers actually see an increase.
