For us, the answers from Columbia University are “first promising step”

The government of the President of the United States Donald Trump described Columbia’s response on Monday to the demands of the government to harden the rules on campus protests as a “promising first step” to recover federal subsidies and contracts.

At the beginning of this month, the Trump administration canceled subsidies and contracts granted to Columbia about $ 400 million, stating that the protests of pro-Palestinian students on the campus had caused an atmosphere of anti-Semitic harassment.

So, on March 20, the government sent an extraordinary letter to Columbia with nine requests relating to the rules of New York Private University on protests and discipline.

Columbia replied on Friday, saying that it was in accordance with at least some of the requirements and that some of the modifications requested were already underway long before the government’s letter.

In one of the actions outlined by Columbia on Friday, he claimed to create a new role of vice-rector to focus on “regional studies” programs, starting from a review of the Middle East programs in the university departments, as well as to their international centers in Tel Aviv and Amman.

The creation of the new function was followed by the requirement of the Trump government according to which the Columbia administration has inserted a specific department, the Middle East, Southern Asia and African studies under academic protection. The protection usually implies assuming the control of the faculty.

Columbia also said that it was changing its disciplinary process and is trying to expand intellectual diversity in its hiring to the faculty and that she had already started recruiting 36 police officers with prison powers to help with the security of the campus.

“The announcement of Columbia is a first positive step for the University to maintain a financial relationship with the government of the United States,” said a joint declaration on Monday of the United States of the United States of General Service and the Education and Health Departments.

“Columbia is demonstrating adequate cooperation with the requests of the Trump government and we foresee a lasting resolution,” said Linda McMahon, secretary of the United States.
