The character of Asterix was born from the imagination of screenwriter René Goskin and designer Albert Uderzo in a few hours one evening in Bobigny in 1959. He first appears in the weekly comic pilotAnd after success, the famous hero will have the rights to his own comic, the first part of which Asterix GalilIt was released two years later in 1962. To date, the series has no less than 37 albums, which has led to many film adaptations.
After seven animated films released between 1967 and 1994, 1999 saw the release of Claude Zeid’s first live-action film, Asterix and Obelix vs. Caesar, starring Christian Clavier and Gérard Depardieu as the two heroes. Three more films would follow, including Asterix and Obelix: Mission Cleopatra, which remains the series’ biggest box office success to this day and a definitive reference for comic book fans.
Directed by Alain Chabat, the 2002 film, like any big popular success, celebrated its era with some memorable scenes and dialogues. Thus, we think of the monologue made iconic by Edward Baer alias Otis, who explains that there is no such thing as a “good or bad situation.” We also remember the recent confrontation between Jamel Debussy and Gerard Darmon with this incredible rock-paper-scissors duel. The most famous of the cages will have the rights to a new adaptation, Asterix and Obelix: Middle Empire, the release of which has been delayed several times, is scheduled for February 1, 2023. Directed by Guillaume Canet, who also stars. The main role, together with his friend Gilles Lelouch.
