The production of “Snowpiercer”, a series about a climate apocalypse, was influenced by real climate change around the world. The plot takes place in a new ice age and episode recording of its fourth and final season had to be suspended due to the extreme and unexpected heat that hit the set in southwestern British Columbia, Canada, the region that hosted the Winter Olympics in 2010!
As the story unfolds in freezing temperatures, all cast members wear warm clothing, which has caused several cases of dehydration and heat exhaustion.
The American website Deadline found that at least 14 people, including extras and crew members, were transported by ambulance to local hospitals.
“Out of caution, production of ‘Express of Tomorrow’ has been suspended due to the extreme heat at the location,” said a spokesperson for Tomorrow Studios, the company that produces the post-apocalyptic drama. “The health and well-being of the show’s cast and crew remain a top priority.”
The spokesperson also explained that cooling tents have been made available for the cast and crew and that a medical team is present on the set. Everyone was asked to let the production know if anyone was feeling overheated, he added.
Developed by Graeme Mason (co-creator of “Orphan Black”), “Express of Tomorrow” is based on the French comics and the eponymous film directed by South Korean Bong Joon-ho (big Oscar 2020 with his highest number of “Parasite “), and features in its cast Daveed Diggs (from” The Get Down “series) and Jennifer Connelly (from” Noé “).
The plot takes place aboard a train of nearly a thousand wagons, which transports the last survivors of humanity, after a climate disaster has created a new ice age. Season 3 ended with a big twist, with the separation of the wagons, divided into two trains that decide to head in opposite directions, and the discovery of a thawed place in Africa.
The great cast also includes Sean Bean (Ned Stark from “Game of Thrones”), Mickey Sumner (“Mistress America”), Annalize Basso (“Ouija: Dawn of Evil”), Sasha Frolova (“Operation Red Sparrow”), Hiro Kanagawa (“The Man in the High Castle” series), Susan Park (“Vice-Principals” series), Ryan Robbins (“Continuum” series), Roberto Urbina (“Narcos” series), Jonathan Walker (“The Thing” ), Aleks Paunovic (“Van Helsing”), Alison Wright (“Serie The Americans”) and, from the second season, Rowan Blanchard (“Girl Meets World”).
Season 4, currently in production, will see Clark Gregg and a new showrunner, Paul Zbyszewski, who previously directed the actor on “Agents of SHIELD”.
There are still no premiere predictions for the last few chapters, which should only be shown in 2023.
The series is part of the Netflix catalog in Brazil.
