Disney Channel unveiled its first trans character last week. This is Nikki, a character who has been hired as an assistant to the protagonist of “The House of Raven”.

The series is a continuation of “That’s So Raven” (2003-2007) and reunites Raven (played by Raven-Symoné) as an adult, along with her children and best friend Chelsea Daniels (Anneliese van der Pol).

In the storyline that began earlier this month, Raven searches for an influencer to promote her new design studio. This is where Nikki comes in, the new character played by Juliana Joel, who is the host of the show “The Q Agenda”, as well as being openly trans and involved in the struggles of the movement.

Excited and proud, the actress celebrated the casting on Instagram, thanking the team.

“First trans character on Disney Channel? Can I finally share that I joined the cast of ‘House of Raven’ season 5 … A big hug to Nori Reed, the writer of this episode who created my character Nikki. She is a such a talented person., fantastic genius and comedian. And of course, thanks to all the cast and crew for being so welcoming, “he wrote.

The actress also said that, as a child, her biggest dream was to be in the original 2003 series and joked that she figured Raven Baxter was her best friend.

After the episode aired, she returned to Instagram to thank her followers for their support and encouragement. “Thanks for all the love this week. And yes, I’m still crying,” she wrote.

Juliana Joel’s casting marks a new phase for the children’s channel, which also makes her productions available through the Disney + streaming service.

The company has been working with LGBTQIA + representation in its productions since 2017, when the second season of “Andi Mack” revealed that boyfriend Cyrus (Joshua Rush) had romantic feelings for Jonah (Asher Angel), the title character’s boyfriend (played from Peyton). Elizabeth Lee).

The actress Raven-Symoné herself is an outspoken member of the LGBTQIA + community. She is married to Miranda Maday.
