The British King Charles used his annual Easter message on Thursday to reflect on the war, the human suffering and the heroism of those who risk their lives to protect others.
“One of the puzzles of our humanity is the way we are capable of great cruelty and great kindness,” he said, describing what he called the “paradox of human life”.
“At a time, the terrible images of human suffering and, in another, heroic acts in the countries devastated by the war, in which humanitarian of all kinds risk their lives to protect the lives of others”.
Charles, 76, would have participated in the Royal Maundy Service in the Cathedral of Durham, a ceremony in which 76 men and 76 women receive symbolic gifts from coins specifically launched in a secular custom that recognizes the recipients for their Christian service.
“There are three virtues that the world still needs: faith, hope and love. And the greatest of them is love,” said Charles, referring to a passage of the New Testament.
