Casting critic of the Moscow military offensive in Ukraine, Barabash wrote in March 2022 on Facebook that Russia had “bombed the country” near and “devastated entire cities”.
From the invasion of the Ukrainian territory, the Kremlin has forbidden criticism to the operations of the armed forces, although it denying to pronounce civilians. Human rights groups, however, affirm that the Russian government uses the law as a tool for repression of contrary opinions, similar to the system implemented by the Soviet Union during the Cold War.
In recent years, thousands of people have been accused of “describing” the Russian military. The former television conductor, who sentenced the war to Ukraine during a live broadcast, fled Russia in 2022 after having fled the arrest of the house.
Last week, a Moscow court sentenced journalists Sergey Karelin, Konstantin Gabov, Antonina Favorskaya and Arths Kriger to five and a half years of prison.
