New times, new rules for the IA in the Oscar

Summary

The Academy has updated the Oscar rules, allowing the use of AI in films without influencing the admissibility and obliges voters to watch all the nominated in the categories for which they vote.

And the Oscar 2026 goes to … artificial intelligence? It is almost that. The fact is that the Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences has just officially updated the rules of eligibility for the Oscars.

According to the new guidelines, the films they use were still totally suitable for nominations and victories in the Oscar. With the new rule, the use of generative or other digital tools “will not help or damage the possibilities of an indication”.

Yes, the gym and its committees will evaluate each film considering “the degree in which a human being was at the center of creative paternity” when he selected the nominated.

But how will the voters do, since it is not necessary that the filmmakers reveal the use of the AI during the registration process? It has made it easy … so in practice the IA is released.

The latter Oscar had already opened the doors giving the Oscar the best actor to Adrien Brody. After all, “The Brutalist” used vocal cloning software to improve its Hungarian accent.

And “Emilia Pérez” used the IA to increase the vocal extension of the actress Karla Sofa Gasco and mix his voice with that of the French pop star Camille. All this has considerably intensified the debate on the authenticity of performance. But when you use “Motion Capture” to transform a Mark Ruffalo into Hulk, for example, wasn’t it in question? And the aliens who act in the Avatar series?

The problem goes beyond acting. Recent negotiations between unions as a screenwriter and studies have focused on the protection of human paternity and on the guarantee that writers maintain control over the use (or not) of the AI in their work. Of course, a screenwriter can use IA to develop your script and nobody will ever know.

But perhaps another great change in the Academy’s policy ends up having an even greater impact of these.

From now on, all Oscar voters will have to watch all the films in the categories they will vote for. Vote with more knowledge of the cause, of course.

Considering that only for the “best movie” there are ten films indicated, imagine how long the voters will have to invest to choose who takes the Oscar.

Here I already foresee that many of them will soon use the IA for something else: transforming that three -hour epic into a 15 -minute summary. As we already do to listen to the audio, accelerate …
