The railway connection should cost around $ 12 billion; The expectation is to meet 50 thousand passengers per day
The government of San Paolo has opened, Wednesday 30, public consultation for the granting of the fast train that will connect the capital to Sorocaba, inside San Paolo. It is the first step in removing the project of the intercity train of the western axis, which should create a new passenger movement option between the two metropolitan regions.
Currently, public transport between San Paolo and the Sorocaba region are exclusively on the road, from normal bus lines.
The railway connection, which existed in the past, will cost about $ 12 billion. The route, about 100 kilometers, should be traveled in 60 minutes. The expectation is to meet 50 thousand passengers per day.
The expiry of consultation, in which individuals and companies can offer suggestions and contribute to the project, takes place until June 2nd. The electronic form for contributions is available on the SPI website.
The auction should take place by the end of this year. The date will be scheduled after the closing of the public consultation. The signature of the contract must take place in 2026.
The train to Sorocaba will operate from the White Station of Acqua, in the capital, which undergoes an expansion process. The interventions include the implementation of platforms to meet the new requests, since the station also satisfies the tic of the north axis, which connects San Paolo to Campinas, in addition to local transport.
The project includes two service methods. The first, an express train, which follows directly from the white station, in the capital, to the Sorocaba station. The other, a service with stops in the four intermediate stations of Carapicuíba, Amador Bueno, São Roque and Brigadeiro Tobias. The rates will still be defined.
The stretch on the borders of Sorocaba will follow the layout of the old Sorocabana railway (EFS), which will undergo adaptations. Currently the railway line is used by loading trains. The old Sorocaba station, which is still part of the original structure, from 1875, is deteriorated by the lack of use and, if the boarding and landing option in the city, will need restoration.
When it starts to work, the train will represent an economy of over 40% compared to the car and 50% compared to the transport of buses by bus. The project includes the modernization and construction of stations, the acquisition of a new fleet and the integration with the lines of the metropolitan trains, the subway and the north axis.
Focusing on accessibility and inclusion, the ICTs or adapted bathrooms will present, spaces for children (day centers and breastfeeding) and actions aimed at fighting harassment in public transport.
The western axis is the second intercity train to auction. In May 2024, the government of San Paolo made the concession of the north axis, which will connect San Paolo to Campinas. The auction was won by the mobility of the C2 consortium on the tracks.
The contract provides for $ 14.2 billion investments in 30 years. The project provides for the modernization of the railway for the functioning of medium speed trains.
Historical past
The transport of passengers by the trains between San Paolo and Sorocaba dates back to the end of the nineteenth century, when the initial stretch of EFS was inaugurated by connecting the two cities. The train started from Julio Presthes station in the capital and traveled in about two hours, stopping on different stations along the tracks. Sorocaba station was expanded in 1929.
In the 1940s, with the electrification of the line, the railway began to manage electric trains. The railway was incorporated by Fepasa in 1971 and, in 1998, with the end of the state -owned company, the Ferroban dealership hired the operation and maintained passenger trains in the early 2000s. In 2006, under the management of Latin Latin logistics (All), the railway began to operate only with the load.
