Parliamentary and main peace negotiator Ander dies at 62 years old

Sirri Sureyya Onder, an important Pro-Party Curva MP and a key figure in the temporary process of Turkey to end the insurrection of the Curistan World Party (PKK), died on Saturday at the age of 62, said his party.

Ander, vice -president of Parliament, was among the parliamentarians of the DEM party who recently met the leader of the PKK Abdullah Ocalan and spoke last week with President Tayyip Erdogan in an attempt to end in decades who killed tens of thousands.

It was taken to the hospital about two weeks after a heart attack and a breaking of the aorta, according to the hospital where it was treated in Istanbul. After the recovery of the heartbeat, he underwent surgery of about 12 hours.

Onder spent 18 days in intensive care, but died of multiple insufficiency of the organs on Saturday, said the Istanbul hospital.

Known for his intelligence, poetry and warm public presence, Onder was also a talented director and screenwriter of works that mixed political narrative with social criticisms.

He actively participated in the negotiation process that led PKK to declare a ceased unilateral fire in March. A decade before, he also played a central role as an intermediary in the negotiations between the government of Erdogan and the PKK.

Ander was arrested in 2018 for a speech considered “terrorist propaganda” and later was tried in the case of Kobani’s protests, facing life imprisonment, but was not arrested due to parliamentary impunity.

He also served a prison sentence in the 80s after a military coup.
