Months of sincere after the cancellation of the first round of presidential elections in Romania due to suspicions of Russian interference, the country’s voters return to the polls on Sunday (04/05), in a claim in which the ultra is a favorite.

Almost 18 million citizens capable of voting are called to elect a new president of the country, which is part of the EU and NATO. The position is mostly ceremonial, with powers that include the definition of foreign and safety policy.

Calin Georgescu, who surprised to beat the first round that was subsequently canceled, was excluded from the presidential race.

The new favorite for this first round is another ultra: George Simion.

Simion has about 30% in the polls, a comfortable advantage, but well below 50% necessary to avoid a second round on May 18.

“It’s time to resume our country,” said Georgescu after voting for Mogosoia, near Bucharest, together with Simion.

“Calin, We Love You” and “Georgescu, president”, shouted a small crowd on the scene.

Eleven candidates are running for the presidency in the first round.

“Romania in the first place”

Simion leads the nationalist party Aur. He said he wants to transform the November electoral “theft” into a victory.

The 38 -year -old candidate, who promises to put “Romania First”, hopes to win at least some votes of Georgescu.

“We are here with a mission: to restore democracy (…) and bring justice to Romania,” said Simion.

Simion claims to be “more moderate” by Georgescu, although he shares his animosity about what he calls “unprecedented bureaucrats of Brussels”, accusing them of interfering with the Romanian elections.

He denounced Russia, but opposes the sending of military aid to Ukraine, who borders and he wants to reduce the help to Ukrainian refugees.

A fervent supporter of Donald Trump, often seems to wear a cap with the famous President of the United States, “Rend America Great Again”, and hopes to become the “President” of Romania.

“Fierce Race”

In addition to Simion, three other candidates have the opportunity to reach the second round, scheduled for May 18.

Crin Antonescu, supported by the coalition of the pro-European government, offers stability, while the mayor of Bucharest Nicusor Dan promises to fight the “corrupt” and “arrogant” political elite.

In fourth place is the former Social Democratic Prime Minister Victor Ponta, who leads a “before Romania” campaign, inspired by Trump.

“The race is very ferocious”, A AFP Remus Stetuleac, director of the research company in Scop Research. He added that “one of the four can win the presidency”.

Stetuleac believes that the position of the candidates in the polls can “completely change” with fierce discussions, the ferocious online campaign and the high number of undecided voters.

The vote will be followed closely after the surprise cancellation of the first round of last year.

Thousands of people have protested in recent months to denounce a “coup d’état”.

Even the American vice -president JD Vance criticized the cancellation of the elections and asked to listen to “the voice of the people”.

To avoid the repetition of last year’s turbulence, the authorities have adopted preventive measures and collaborated with the Video platform of Tiktok, who said they were engaged in an election “equitable and transparent”.
