The late night talk show wars that broke out in the 1990s are almost entirely absent these days, though the listening game is still a legitimate battle for producers and network executives. For proof, look Jimmy Kimmel takes over the show tonight when Jimmy Fallon hit the Jimmy Kimmel Live! scene like the April Fool’s Day jokes earlier this year. But someone who is very familiar with all aspects of the Rubik’s Cube talk show is former NBC lover Jay Leno, whose the alleged rivalries with David Letterman and Conan O’Brien are among the TV legends. Some fans may not recall that Leno had even half-burned bridges with Kimmel during that controversial time surrounding O’Brien’s mismanagement. show tonight acquisition, but it’s something Leno apologizes for now.
Jimmy Kimmel and Bill Maher discussed Jay Leno and that tumultuous time on NBC during a June episode from Maher’s podcast random poker, Kimmel reflecting on it, saying it definitely wasn’t Team Jay, and admitting he had a feud then, but not anymore. For him last installment of his podcast, Maher hosted Leno himself for a drink and a chat, and Leno provided context and insight into how his problems within the network spilled over to Kimmel and ABC, and in fact admitted that, without knowing it , I was wrong in this situation. . (Although always is not responsible for the consequences with O’Brien .) Here’s how he first framed things before actually delving into his memories of how things happened:
It’s interesting because I heard Kimmel tell you about it, and I called him, and I did, and I didn’t know I had to make a follow-up call with them, so I apologize.
When Bill Maher asked about the possibility of Leno jumping to other networks, which is what the whole Jimmy Kimmel fiasco is tied to, Leno jumped at the beginning of it all, five years before their temporary relationship. show tonight pause, when the NBC executives would have asked Leno to announce his possible departure at the behest of the “people of Conan”. He talked about the conversations that followed his follow-up series, Jay Leno’s showgoing from late night to early evening, which should have been a cost saver compared to expensive dramas like Law and order: SVU. The idea failed, even though Leno and his entire staff apparently received two years’ salary as a show of good faith from NBC, and discussions then shifted to how Leno might re-enter the late-night training.
At this point, the NBC bosses wanted to reschedule Jay Leno at 11:30 PM ET for a half-hour show that would precede the show tonight, which would pass after midnight. (This is what prompted Conan O’Brien’s ultimatum press release that prompted him to leave NBC entirely for profit.) Please contact Jimmy Kimmel for his opinion on any changes to the program. Here’s how Leno said it:
I called Jimmy Kimmel and said, “I’m getting offers from ABC.” I don’t want to start everything from here. If they talk about putting me at 11:30 would you like to continue at 12:30? I think he said yes, he wanted it. I said, ‘Oh, that’s fine.’ We became friends. And so [the move to ABC] it didn’t happen and was made public. And I guess I should have called Jimmy and explained it again, but I didn’t. I don’t know why I didn’t, I just didn’t. I thought he probably would find out, but I think he might have hurt him and I apologize.
While Jay Leno was obviously right in assuming that Jimmy Kimmel would eventually be able to read the writing on the wall, it’s entirely understandable that Kimmel would have felt a little disappointed with the whole thing. From his point of view, a competitor called him out of the blue and presented a groundbreaking situation, then performed a phantom move and never mentioned it again. This is by no means the most normal behavior, and it’s possible that Kimmel felt there was something suspicious and dishonest about it. (He and Bill Maher argued with laughter that Leno was a “shrewd” individual in this regard, so Kimmel is no stranger to show tonight vet trick.)
Speaking of which, in a way, here is the general reason why Leno claims he chose to stay with NBC rather than move to another network:
I am quite loyal. You know, sometimes the czar you have is better than what you get. So you also have your old team shooting at you. I just thought, let’s play this and see what happens. It all happened pretty quickly.
Either way, neither Jimmy Kimmel nor Jay Leno seem to have persistent grudges or a feud mentality, so maybe one day fans will see them appear as guests in random poker. Does Bill Maher have enough weed and alcohol for that? Beyond, don’t be surprised find the bed and breakfast of Leno a the show tonight from time to time, as well as complete Kelly Clarkson’s show sometimes, though he will probably never work full time again .
New random poker The episodes are released every Wednesday, while the two the show tonight Yes Jimmy Kimmel Live! airs weekdays on NBC and ABC (respectively) at 11:35 PM ET. go to our Program of the first TV 2022 to see what’s coming up in prime time in the coming months.
