The American newspaper New York Post exclusively published this Tuesday (2/8) that the movie “Batgirl” has been completely scrapped by Warner. Although ready, it will not be released in theaters or shown in streaming.
According to the publication’s sources, the test screenings for the public were a complete disaster. The film would have been so badly received that the studio considered shelving it so as not to damage the brand and the universe of Batman’s productions.
“They think the elusive ‘Batgirl’ is hopeless,” the source said.
Deadline also confirmed the collision, making “Batgirl” the biggest waste of money in Hollywood history.
The film reportedly cost $ 70 million to produce, although the newspaper’s source says Warner ended up spending more than $ 100 million.
Although the synopsis was not revealed, the film was supposed to tell the story of how Commissioner Gordon’s daughter was inspired by Batman to adopt a secret identity and fight crime.
The title character was played by Leslie Grace (“In a Neighborhood of New York”), marking the first appearance of a black Latin Batgirl in any media. And the cast will include the return of JK Simonns as James Gordon, reviving his participation in the DCU (DC Comics Cinematic Universe) after “Justice League”, as well as bringing Michael Keaton as Batman, after reprising the role in the Flash movie coming out. . .
The script was by Christina Hodson, who did not shine in “Birds of Prey” and also signed the next Flash movie. Directing has already been signed by duo Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah (“Bad Boys For Life”), who recently worked on the acclaimed “Ms. Marvel” series on Disney +.
The cancellation comes after “Batgirl” missed, without mention, the Warner panel during Comic-Con International, held in San Diego in July. Already at the time, the absence of this and other DC comic-based projects attracted a lot of attention.
Another important detail is that the person responsible for licensing the film is no longer at Warner.
When he was president of the studio, Toby Emmerich initially commissioned production for streaming, but later considered a theatrical screening, reflecting the change in status of “Blue Beetle,” another comic book adaptation that also began as an HBO film. Max. And turned into a cinematic priority.
But Emmerich stepped down in June to form his production company after Warner Bros. merged with Discovery. New Warner Bros. CEO David Zaslav of Discovery has replaced the executive with Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy, both former MGMs.
