The muscle-bound take on the early ’90s cult film Road House begins filming this summer for release on Prime Video. Jake Gyllenhaal takes on the role of Barry’s attempt, directed by the “La Mémoire dans la peau” director.

A contemporary Western that sees an unnamed bouncer-philosopher enter a bar in a small Missouri town to rid it of the local tyrant, road house It had a modest theatrical career (barely $30 million at the US box office… and five Razzie Award nominations) before achieving cult film status thanks to its exploitation in video clubs and its multicasts on television. Sam Elliott, the main character’s mentor, thus evokes it as the film most talked about by his fans.
If Road House 2 finally saw the light of day in 2005 – without Patrick Swayze, but with Jonathon Schaech as his son – and a female version with Ronda Rousey was mentioned in 2015, the Road House remake is now back. An original film is already in production at Amazon Studios under the direction of legendary producer Joel Silver (Lethal Weapon, Predator, Piège de Cristal, The Matrix).
Most remakes of hits from the ’80s and ’90s certainly weren’t exactly convincing (one thinks of Robocop, Conan, or Footloose), but this new version road house has some interesting arguments. On the casting side, Jake Gyllenhaal (already impressive as a boxer in The Rage in the Belly) will camp as a former UFC champion turned failure at a facility in Florida. Next to him we will find specifically Billy Magnussen (recently on the Dying can Wait poster) and Daniela Melchior (Suicide Squad announcement).

For the performance, Doug Liman, who dynamited action with La Mémoire dans la Peau and Edge of Tomorrow, will slip behind the camera for a featurette envisioned as a tribute to the original film and its fans, which is expected to reach audiences as well.
