Pope Leo XIV will receive Zelensky this Sunday, says the Vatican

Ponteff plans to mediate peace efforts between Russia and Ukraine

Pope Leo XIV will receive the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky in the Vatican on Sunday after the inauguration mass that officially marked the beginning of his pontificate, reported the bulletin released by the Holy See.

The meeting will take place after Robert Francis Prevost cited the “martyred Ukraine” in reciting the Prayer of Regina Coeli in São Pedro Square and appeals to “just and lasting peace”.

In the last few days, the Secretary of State of the Vatican, Pietro Parolin, said that Leo XIV at the end intends to make the Holy See available for a direct meeting “between Ukraine and Russia.

According to the cardinal, the tour of the negotiations between Kiev and Moscow in Istanbul was “tragic”, “very difficult and dramatic”, because everyone expected “that a process could start, perhaps slowly, with a peaceful solution to the conflict, but on the contrary, we are again at the beginning”.

The Pope means “in the end, making the Vatican, the Holy See, available for a direct meeting between the parties”, said the representative of the Catholic Church.

Yesterday, Zelensky had also said that he would be available behind the scenes of the inauguration mass to meet “any other world leader” for negotiations.

According to Kiev Ambassador of Holy See, Andrii Yurash, the Ukrainian president is available to “keep the conversations” and speak of a “new level” in the relations between Ukraine and the Holy See with the US elections as a new pope.
